This is a short film Aerial Images North Leigh which highlights the West Oxfordshire village of North Leigh and its windmill. This film is one in our Aerial Photography Oxfordshire series. A view of the 1833 built North Leigh Windmill, built by Joseph Shepherd in the West Oxfordshire village. Joseph was a baker as well as a miller and paid for the windmill to be built. It had four common sails and a conical cap. The mill itself was restored in 1881 as well as 1933 but the windmill was altered in 1940 to remove the conical cap to help the allies during the Second World War as it became a observation post. This was sadly the last of the changes to the building which began to fall into a state of disrepair and decay. During the 1980s the local council, West Oxfordshire District Council, tried to bring about changes to the mill by forcing the owner to repair the building. The sails for the mill are believed to be stored inside the building. A new cap has been installed to make the structure weatherproof. Look out for the cow weather vein which sadly no longer accurately predicts the wind direction. Further information on this small West Oxfordshire village can be found here
